A turning point came when Emilia, facing imminent death, reminded Subaru of how he transformed from the ordinary guy introduced in the series premiere into the reliable hero people look up to. The amnesic Subaru couldn’t fathom how he earned the respect of the powerful figures around him, which fed his dark fear that he might secretly be a monster all along.

This context makes his latest exchange with Ram so vital. While it echoes their past interactions, Subaru approaches this one with newfound composure and self-awareness, speaking with genuine conviction rather than empty bravado. Though Ram remains typically harsh, she recognizes this shift, allowing their dynamic to evolve. Her snow-covered field metaphor hits the mark: while he may no longer be the warm, open summer field he was when he first entered the tower, he has the capacity to return to that state. By reassuring him of this, Ram confirms he is finally back on track.

Another crucial element enabling Subaru’s mental reset is the unwavering affection and backing from his companions. Experiencing that kind of grace even when he felt unworthy shapes his choices throughout this episode. For instance, after piecing together that Meili is responsible for his deaths in past loops, he resists the urge to react with suspicion. Instead, having read her book of the dead, he approaches her with genuine empathy—especially since a phantom version of Meili had been lingering in his mind, trying to reshape him in her own dark image.

His deep understanding of her struggles allows him to anticipate her suicide attempt and step in with Emilia’s help to prevent it. Ultimately, Meili is simply a lost, overwhelmed child grappling with her emotions and uncertain about her future. Emilia offers wise counsel, noting that the claustrophobic, high-pressure environment of the tower is no place to make irreversible life choices. Given time, space, and reflection, other paths may open up.

Having spent her entire life treated either as a weapon or as the subordinate of a psychotic killer, Meili has no baseline for a normal human existence. It now falls to Subaru and his allies to expose her to the best of humanity rather than its cruelty, hoping she can heal and learn from their example.

With this immediate crisis defused, the group turns their attention back to the task at hand: conquering the tower’s next trial. Locating Reid’s book of the dead seems like a logical next step, though figuring out who should read it remains a delicate matter given the psychological toll Subaru just endured with Phantom Meili.

More importantly, Subaru is missing a critical piece of the puzzle. While the phantom Meili clearly originated from reading her death book—explaining why repeating her words about “murder becoming a habit” rattled the real Meili—it also confirms that the apparition was merely a construct of his own mind. This means the phantom was neither orchestrating nor controlling his recent blackouts. Something far more sinister is lurking in the shadows, possessing the ability to hijack Subaru’s body while exploiting his deepest fears with calculated cruelty. In short, the group faces a far greater menace than a bored legendary swordsman, and ignoring this hidden threat could spell doom for Subaru in this current loop.
