Disney and Square Enix brought exciting news for Kingdom Hearts enthusiasts during Friday’s D23 presentation, treating fans to a fresh look at Kingdom Hearts 4 alongside the confirmation of a brand-new Disney+ series.
The latest 90-second promotional video highlights a brand-new realm inspired by Pixar’s acclaimed film, Coco. In it, faithful adaptations of Miguel and Hector share the screen with Sora, who sports festive Día de Muertos face paint. While Miguel takes the stage to perform, Sora defends the area against Shadow Heartless using a unique, vibrant Keyblade crafted from marigolds, bones, sugar skulls, and guitars. The footage also highlights cooperative combat sequences featuring Sora, Miguel, and Hector fighting side by side.
Beyond the Land of the Dead, the D23 footage returns Sora to the realistic urban setting of Quadratum, where massive Heartless threaten the metropolis. Fans also caught snippets of dialogue, including a monologue from Mickey Mouse, a chat between Goofy and Hades, and mysterious spectral forms of both Donald Duck and Goofy.
Most notably, Square Enix pinned down a release window, announcing that Kingdom Hearts 4 will arrive in “late 2027.” The anticipated title is slated for launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via both Steam and the Epic Games Store.
Kingdom Hearts: The Series Announced
Alongside the game updates, the companies revealed that an episodic Kingdom Hearts anime is currently in production for the Disney Channel and Disney Plus. Series director Tetsuya Nomura is collaborating with Square Enix’s creative teams on the project, which aims to retell the beloved journey through an original narrative designed to broaden the franchise’s lore while honoring its iconic cast.
A premiere date for the television series has not yet been shared.
