The plan was to deliver four special episodes completely re-animated using cutting-edge modern technology. The community was treated to an incredible 10-minute preview trailer that reimagined iconic moments from the original series with a fresh, contemporary art style. And then, absolute radio silence.
Originally slated for a September 2023 premiere, the episodes were officially postponed the month before to allow the studio more time to elevate the production quality. Since that announcement, Studio Pierrot has kept quiet while pouring its resources into Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, leaving the fandom wondering what became of the project. Some optimistic viewers have theorized that the overwhelmingly positive response to the teaser prompted higher-ups to expand the scope into a full-scale, secret remake. Whatever the reality behind the scenes is, answers might finally arrive soon at New York Comic Con.
According to Viz Media and Shueisha, a dedicated Naruto panel is scheduled for October 10 at the convention. While convention panels happen all the time, this one came with a specific tease that a “new project” will be unveiled, accompanied by Viz’s intriguing tagline: “Could this be the start of something big? Stay tuned for more!”
To say fans have been waiting is an understatement, as patience has been tested for over three years. The initial rush of adrenaline from the “Road of Naruto” teaser gradually curdled into frustration. Many felt the franchise wasn’t being treated as a top priority by its rights holders despite its massive, enduring global footprint. On top of that, subsequent announcements mostly amounted to smaller endeavors like video games or art exhibitions. While any new content is appreciated, the prolonged delays turned a massive anniversary hype train into a source of community exhaustion.
Fortunately, the timing seems to be aligning once again. October 2027 marks the 25th anniversary of the Naruto anime, opening the door for a major remake reveal this October with a targeted 2027 release. Back in May, financial disclosures from TV Tokyo indicated that the network has “several projects planned” for the milestone, treating it as “the beginning of a new stage.” Given that TV Tokyo was the original home for the broadcast in Japan, a grand homecoming might very well be in development.
The anime landscape, however, looks vastly different now than it did during Naruto‘s original broadcast run. The exhausting weekly production schedule—which frequently compromised animation quality and forced endless filler arcs—has largely given way to the seasonal model. Contemporary audiences expect high-end visuals and consistent polish. Fortunately, Pierrot’s stellar work on Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War proves the studio is fully equipped to meet those modern expectations.
Hopefully, the long-suffering fanbase will finally get rewarded on October 10. With rumors of Dragon Ball Super making a comeback and a potential new Bleach project looming on the horizon, 2027 could shape up to be a legendary resurgence for the classic pillars of the medium (especially with *One Piece* also receiving its own WIT Studio remake).
