Crunchyroll to Release Makoto Shinkai’s New Film Globally, Excluding Most of Asia – News

Crunchyroll announced on Tuesday that it has secured the majority of global distribution rights for acclaimed director Makoto Shinkai’s upcoming feature film. While the agreement excludes most of Asia, it notably includes India. Crunchyroll will partner with Sony Pictures to co-distribute the movie worldwide.

Specific details regarding the project, including its official title, have not yet been disclosed by Crunchyroll. However, Shinkai shared on social media in November 2025 that he was collaborating with a trusted team on a "new film," though he noted that a formal announcement was still forthcoming.

This new project follows the massive global success of Shinkai’s previous film, Suzume (Suzume no Tojimari), which debuted at the top of the Japanese box office in November 2022 before rolling out internationally, including an April 2023 release in North America distributed by Crunchyroll in both Japanese with subtitles and an English dub.

Suzume dominated international box office charts upon release, pulling in over $5 million during its opening weekend in the United States and eventually surpassing $10 million domestically. In Japan, the film concluded its theatrical run in May 2023 with a massive 14.79 billion yen (roughly $105.3 million) in earnings, contributing to a global box office total of over $221 million. Suzume is currently available to stream on Crunchyroll.
