Fans eagerly awaiting the next phase of the Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle saga can find a thrilling alternative in Kenji Nakamura’s visually stunning animated movie trilogy. Mononoke offers the exact same recipe of striking aesthetics, memorable personalities, and intense battles against malevolent spirits. The grand finale of this trilogy, titled Mononoke The Movie: Chapter III — The Curse of the Serpent, is set to make its global debut on Netflix on Sept. 29.
The franchise first captured viewers’ hearts in the early 2000s as an anime series. Its lush visual presentation and the enigmatic protagonist—known simply as the Medicine Seller—charmed audiences as he expertly exorcised vengeful specters called mononoke. Given the widespread adoration for the original show, Nakamura’s decision to continue the Medicine Seller’s journey in a movie trilogy was a natural progression. In this inner palace, concubines and handmaidens dedicate their entire existence to the service of the ruler.
Arriving after Mononoke the Movie: The Phantom in the Rain (2024) and Mononoke the Movie: Chapter II — The Ashes of Rage (2025), The Curse of the Serpent centers on the Medicine Seller’s investigation into the Midaidokoro. As the shogun’s wife and the most powerful woman in the Ōoku, she commands immense authority. Given that mononoke are born directly from human malice, grief, and hidden grudges, it is safe to assume there is plenty of deep-seated resentment harbored against the palace’s leading lady.
