Episode 18 – Daemons of the Shadow Realm

This latest installment largely puts Asuma under the microscope. Right from the beginning, he has exuded a suspicious aura. Not only do his outward philosophies conflict with the Kagemori clan, but his demeanor always feels like a facade masking his true intentions with forced cheerfulness.

Granted, while he has been lumped into the villain category for this arc alongside Uncle Hayato and Ivan, it has been fairly obvious that his loyalty to his uncle isn’t absolute. Even before Yozakura shared what she told Yuru during his captivity, Asuma’s behavior was peculiar. He shared more information than necessary in front of a captive Yuru and could have easily stepped in to shield Hayato during Yuru’s assault. However, while Yozakura frames Asuma as an exploited youth whose daemons are essentially being held hostage by someone they secretly despise, I remain somewhat skeptical of that narrative.

To be clear, Hayato is undoubtedly terrible, and I have no doubt that Asuma’s mother suffered abuse at his hands and the broader family’s. It’s also a given that Asuma harbors deep resentment toward his uncle. Yet, rather than a helpless victim, Asuma comes across more like a calculating mastermind orchestrating events behind the scenes.

Ultimately, Hayato has turned into a major liability for Asuma, hindering his overarching agenda rather than advancing it. Asuma needs to sever ties, but he wants to do so in a way that accomplishes two goals: avenging his mother while maintaining the illusion of a devoted family member—and ideally, an innocent victim. By earning the trust of both Yuru and Asa through these calculated moves, he positions himself as the ultimate victor when the dust settles.

Shifting focus to the broader narrative, the episode delivers an exceptional cliffhanger. On one front, Asa arrives on the scene to rescue both Fake Asa and the abducted village girl. This instantly escalates an already volatile situation, guaranteeing a heavy dose of action and drama in the next installment.

Meanwhile, Yuru is thrust into a deeply complex moral dilemma. Though his original mission was to save Fake Asa and the captive child, the parameters of the situation have shifted dramatically. Ivan appears to possess vital answers regarding the fate of Yuru and Asa’s parents, presenting Yuru with what might be his only shot at the truth. Compounding the issue, Ivan is actively trying to kill Left, meaning one of Yuru’s few genuine allies desperately needs his intervention. Consequently, Yuru is forced to weigh the life of a trusted friend and the key to his family’s history against the creature that deceived him for years and an innocent bystander. Neither path offers an easy or inherently immoral answer, making me eager to see what he decides and how those repercussions will eventually catch up to him.
