Renowned anime director Makoto Shinkai has lined up his next big project, with Crunchyroll officially securing worldwide distribution rights outside of Asia. In India, Crunchyroll will independently manage the release, while Sony Pictures Entertainment is set to co-distribute the film globally alongside them.
Although this major distribution agreement is now in place, specific details regarding the film’s official title, plot, and premiere date remain tightly under wraps.
This upcoming partnership builds on the immense success of the creative team’s previous collaboration, Suzume. Released in 2023, the film crossed the $300 million mark at the worldwide box office. It also earned widespread critical praise, securing a Golden Globe nomination and making history by premiering in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival—a rare achievement for an anime feature in recent decades.
Shinkai first revealed that he had officially begun production on his next venture back in December 2025.
Expressing his enthusiasm for future travels, Shinkai noted, “Right now, I’m working on a new film. By the time my next film is finished and released, I hope to visit India again…”
