Following the release of its latest anime short, it is now clear that My Hero Academia has concluded its television run with no plans for future episodes or seasons. Kohei Horikoshi’s source material has been completely adapted, encompassing every extra chapter and one-shot. Although the main anime wrapped up late last year, the franchise celebrated its 10th anniversary by releasing an additional episode and a special short to properly close out the narrative. While Horikoshi currently has no intention of extending the series, fans may still catch occasional commemorative artwork and updates from him down the line.
Rather than stretching a story that reached a fulfilling conclusion, Horikoshi is shifting his focus to fresh projects, highlighted by his recent one-shot, Quit Laughing, Shijima. Driven by his signature artwork and an engaging plot, the release quickly went viral as readers clamored for a full serialization. With the creator moving on to new horizons, the main My Hero Academia anime will not be returning with further canon adaptations. Fortunately, even though the primary series has drawn to a close, followers of the franchise can dive into an exceptional prequel spin-off.
My Hero Academia: Vigilantes Is a Must-Watch For Every Fan
Authored by Hideyuki Furuhashi and illustrated by Court Betten, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes is an official spin-off set five years before the events of the original series. The television adaptation debuted last year and has successfully aired two seasons, though a third season has yet to be officially greenlit, despite the manga having wrapped up its run back in 2022. The plot centers on Koichi Haimawari, an ordinary college student who once harbored ambitions of becoming a professional hero. However, because his Quirk lacked standout power, he ultimately settled into an ordinary routine.
Everything changes when he crosses paths with unlicensed vigilantes who protect citizens from the shadows. As the narrative unfolds, Koichi finds himself tangled up with a dangerous criminal underground. Although Horikoshi is not the writer behind this project, the story remains strictly canon within the established universe. Alongside its fresh cast of characters, the spin-off frequently features familiar faces from the main series—such as Aizawa, All Might, and Midnight—and even expands on Aizawa’s tragic history.
Furthermore, the series provides a closer look at All For One maneuvering behind the scenes before his grand emergence. While this companion series serves as an ideal substitute for fans craving more of the franchise, it still flies somewhat under the radar compared to its predecessor. Additionally, viewers are still awaiting word on whether the anime will receive a third season following the conclusion of Season 2 earlier this year.
