The franchise continues to shape modern action series, cementing its legacy through legendary battles, unforgettable moments, and foundational storytelling tropes that still inspire creators today. Debuting in 1989, Dragon Ball Z served as a direct continuation, picking up a few years after the original anime’s conclusion. It follows an older Goku enjoying a quiet life alongside his wife, Chi-Chi, and their four-year-old son, Gohan.
Naturally, peace never lasts long for the Saiyan warrior. His tranquil existence is upended when a band of alien warriors arrives, exposing his true heritage. Thus begins another grueling era where Goku and the Z Fighters must constantly defend Earth from escalating threats. While legendary showdowns like Goku versus Frieza frequently steal the spotlight, DBZ also featured several instances where the heroes snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, leaving fans groaning in frustration.
3) Gohan Toyed With Perfect Cell and Paid The Price For It
At just 11 years old, Gohan was handed the ultimate burden of protecting the world. Cell was so overwhelmingly powerful that even Goku conceded he couldn’t win, believing only his young son stood a chance. Sensing this, Cell engaged in psychological torture, threatening Gohan’s friends and brutally destroying Android 16 right in front of him. That traumatic tipping point forced Gohan past his limits, pushing him to become the first warrior to achieve the Super Saiyan 2 stage and easily outclass the bio-android.
What should have been a swift and decisive victory turned into a drawn-out display of vengeance. Intoxicated by his newfound strength and eager to make Cell suffer for his cruelty, Gohan chose to toy with his opponent rather than finish him off. This massive lapse in judgment gave Cell the opening he needed to attempt a self-destruction maneuver, forcing Goku to make the ultimate sacrifice. Even after saving the day, Gohan was left burdened by deep regret over his arrogance.
2) Vegeta Allowed Cell to Reach His Perfect Form
Following rigorous conditioning inside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Vegeta and Future Trunks both surpassed Cell’s Imperfect Form, which he had attained after absorbing Android 17. The Saiyan Prince had multiple opportunities to eradicate the monster and protect the planet, but his desire to test his own limits overshadowed his common sense. Rather than prioritizing Earth’s safety, Vegeta was consumed by his obsession to outpace Goku, who had unlocked the Super Saiyan transformation first. Because Saiyans naturally grow stronger through combat, Vegeta was eager to test himself against a formidable challenge.
Ignoring the desperate warnings of Future Trunks, Vegeta actively permitted Cell to absorb Android 18 and achieve his Perfect Form. He paid a catastrophic price for his pride, as the newly evolved villain proved to be vastly stronger and more dangerous than Vegeta could have ever anticipated.
1) Gohan Didn’t Finish Off Super Buu When He Should Have
During the Buu Saga, a ritual performed by Elder Kai unlocked the entirety of Gohan’s latent potential, pushing him past even his father’s Super Saiyan 3 threshold. Out of all the series antagonists, Buu proved to be the most chaotic and difficult threat, particularly after his purely evil side split from his physical body. Once again, the survival of the world fell squarely onto Gohan’s shoulders. Even though years of neglecting his training had made him a bit rusty, his innate potential remained intact.
In fact, this new power was so immense that he didn’t even need to transform to completely overwhelm Super Buu. Often referred to by fans as “Mystic Gohan” and officially designated as “Ultimate Gohan,” he possessed more than enough strength to put an end to the villain immediately. Unfortunately, a combination of overconfidence and a lack of combat discipline led to a frustrating blunder. Super Buu capitalized on the opening, dragging out the terror and forcing Goku to rally the energy of the entire planet to finally destroy him with a Spirit Bomb.
