Disney+ and Disney Channel have officially greenlit an anime television series inspired by the beloved “Kingdom Hearts” video game franchise.
Currently operating under the working title “Kingdom Hearts,” the project is being created alongside game developer Square Enix and visionary creator Tetsuya Nomura. According to official loglines from Disney, the adaptation will offer a fresh narrative that builds upon the franchise’s established lore while honoring the beloved heroes that have resonated with a global fanbase for decades.
While further specifics remain under wraps, a debut promotional image was unveiled, seemingly showcasing series hero Sora alongside his iconic Keyblade.
Ever since the original title launched on the PlayStation 2 in March 2002, Square Enix’s crossover franchise has grown into a massive phenomenon encompassing over twelve installments and surpassing 39 million copies sold globally.
The exciting television announcement was made on Friday by actor Benjamin Bratt during the Disney Entertainment Showcase during the D23 fan convention. Bratt additionally announced that he will reprise his role as Ernesto de la Cruz from Pixar’s “Coco” in the highly anticipated “Kingdom Hearts IV,” which Square Enix slated for a late 2027 release.
This new project expands Disney+’s growing slate of original animated programming, sitting alongside upcoming titles like “Journey,” “Warrior Cats,” and “Messi and the Giants.”
