Today’s endless streaming landscape offers an overwhelming amount of entertainment, but the sheer volume of options often means standout projects slip through the cracks. In 2023, Warner Bros. introduced a visually striking, critically acclaimed animated series to HBO Max that unfortunately lasted for only a single season, leaving many viewers disappointed. After its initial run on the platform, the show found a temporary second home on Netflix. Now, in a surprising turn of events, this hypnotic sci-fi journey across a dangerous alien biosphere is heading to Cartoon Network’s Toonami block.
Beginning on September 5th, Scavengers Reign will officially broadcast on Toonami, offering a fresh lifeline to admirers of the prematurely ended show. The series follows the desperate struggles of a stranded spaceship crew trying to survive on a gorgeous yet lethal alien planet. Following its departure from Netflix earlier this year, passionate supporters have maintained campaigns urging studios to greenlight a second season. While those renewal efforts haven’t yielded results just yet, introducing the series to a late-night cable audience might just spark the renewed momentum Scavengers Reign needs for a triumphant return. Will Scavengers Reign Return?

The heartbreak surrounding Scavengers Reign is that its creative team had extensive plans mapped out for the future of the universe they built. Speaking with ComicBook.com in 2023, executive producers Sean Buckelew and James Merrill revealed that while season one was crafted as a standalone narrative, they had already plotted what would happen next. Merrill noted, “I do feel like we tried to tell a complete story, not a puzzle box that tries to lure people back. That being said, we do have some big ideas as to what could come next. I hope that we get to do it because we want to explore what comes next. We only saw a little bit of the planet.”
Buckelew reinforced this, mentioning that they had plenty of material ready for subsequent seasons, though bringing them to life remains an uphill battle. “We have a couple more seasons mapped out and have some very developed ideas for next season should we get to make more. Fingers crossed because we’d like to spend more time with these characters and really see what else the planet has up its sleeve.” Fortunately, viewers eager to experience this masterclass in modern sci-fi animation don’t have to wait for the Toonami premiere—Scavengers Reign is currently available to stream on HBO Max.
