Dark Horse Manga made several exciting announcements at Anime NYC, revealing new English comic and manga releases tied to iconic horror and dark fantasy franchises.
Among the major highlights is the upcoming release of Vampire Hunter D: Fortress of Blood, a brand-new four-issue comic book series scheduled to launch on December 16, with the first issue priced at $4.99. The creative team features writer Chris Condon (That Texas Blood) and artist Filipe Andrade (The Many Deaths of Laila Starr), alongside colorist Jordie Bellaire and letterer Frank Cvetkovic. The series boasts a striking lineup of cover art, with the main cover by Andrade and variant covers by Riccardo Federici, franchise veteran Yoshitaka Amano, Emma Rios, Dan Quintana, and Eliza Ivanova.
The story follows a ruthless vampire lord marching his army toward human settlements, leaving no survivors in his wake. Standing in his path is a solitary fortress held by a family of outcasts trying to buy time for refugees, as well as D—the legendary, half-human, half-vampire hunter.
Original creator Hideyuki Kikuchi expressed profound excitement over seeing his creation reinvented as an American comic format, extending his gratitude to Dark Horse Comics and the creative team.
In addition to Fortress of Blood, Dark Horse Manga announced an English translation of Saiko Takaki’s Vampire Hunter D: Rose Princess manga—an adaptation of the ninth novel in the series—slated for March 2027, translated by Kevin Leahy. Takaki’s manga originally launched in Japan on Asahi Shimbun’s Sonoroma+ website in July 2024.
Horror fans also have another major title to look forward to: Gou Tanabe’s acclaimed manga adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, which Dark Horse will release in early 2027. Tanabe launched the series in April on Kadokawa’s KadoComi platform under the Comic Beam label. The chilling narrative follows Dr. Marinus Bicknell Willett as he investigates the supposed madness of a young man named Charles Dexter Ward, only to uncover a gruesome and centuries-old family legacy of horror.
This upcoming release expands Dark Horse’s extensive library of Tanabe’s Lovecraft adaptations, which includes award-winning titles like The Call of Cthulhu, At the Mountains of Madness, and The Shadow Out of Time.
