Hollywood’s upcoming live-action Mobile Suit Gundam adaptation just received a massive update, giving longtime followers of the legendary anime series a genuine reason to be excited.
For years, details surrounding the direction of the Gundam feature film have been tightly kept under wraps. However, star Noah Centineo recently dropped a crucial piece of information: the movie is officially set within the iconic Universal Century canon.
This means the cinematic adaptation is diving straight into the foundational timeline where the entire franchise began. Centineo revealed this exciting update during a recent appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, where he also offered a compelling teaser for the plot:
“It’s a big action romance space movie. It lives in the Universal Century canon of Gundam, for those who know. I don’t know how much I can tell you about what characters are in it, but I will say you can compare it to a non-Shakespearean Romeo and Juliet in Space.”
For the fanbase, the Universal Century confirmation is arguably the most thrilling development possible. As the timeline introduced in the original 1980 anime, it established the bitter rivalry between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon. It is also the legendary backdrop that introduced defining figures like Amuro Ray and Char Aznable.
By anchoring the movie in this established continuity rather than forging an entirely separate universe, the filmmakers have access to decades of rich lore, political conflict, and military tech.
