Kadokawa has announced plans to handle the Indonesian distribution for acclaimed director Makoto Shinkai’s upcoming feature film. To bring the movie to audiences in Indonesia and manage local promotional efforts, Kadokawa will partner with Phoenix Gramedia, its regional subsidiary.
On a global scale, Crunchyroll has secured the international distribution rights for the project, covering regions outside of Asia while notably including India.
Makoto Shinkai first teased his next major project in late 2025, sharing on social media that he was collaborating with a trusted team on a brand-new movie, though a formal title and official announcement were still under wraps at the time.
This follows the massive global success of Shinkai’s previous hit, Suzume (Suzume no Tojimari), which debuted at the top of the Japanese box office in November 2022 before rolling out internationally, including an April 2023 North American release distributed by Crunchyroll with both Japanese audio and an English dub.
Suzume dominated box office charts globally upon release, pulling in $5 million during its opening weekend in the United States and eventually crossing the $10 million threshold domestically. By the end of its theatrical run in Japan in May 2023, the film accumulated a massive 14.79 billion yen (approximately $105.3 million). According to Box Office Mojo, the movie boasts a lifetime worldwide gross of $221,184,739. The film is currently available to stream via Crunchyroll.
